Why are you tricking and such?
It's fun, like any other activity that someone does a lot.
How did you get into this mess?
In the early spring of 05 in my Sophomore World History class we had to do a Black heritage presentation. So my group, being the ambitious video-watching little nerds that we were, decided we'd do ours about Capoeira. Which, realistically, originated in Brazil haha. But we thought hey, black people do it, so we can use it for this.
I could always front handspring and cartwheel since I was a little kid. Who couldn't? Well maybe fat people. (And yeno what, as I've come to find out since I first wrote this, lots of people! Haha.) Anyways, so I was going to do that as part of our Capoeira presentation. So one day we're outside in the back of the school and somehow I think or one of my friend randomly suggests "hey dude you should try to back flip," cause yeno in all those Capoeira videos people are always doing back flips just cause.
So, in some utter stroke of randomness, for some inexplicable reason I decided to try to back flip right there on the spot. I have no clue why I wasn't afraid after never having done it before. But I managed to do an (utterly crappy haha) back handspring. WOW! I thought to myself. Along with my friends. And I did it again and again. The fear of going backwards being gone opened up so many possibilities in my mind. So I started learning to do it with no hands and then do it off a wall and do front flips and stuff. Granted, all of my moves back then looked like completely and utter crap. But knowing those few basics flips were some of the funnest days of my life.
Then I progressed, learned more, got better, looked things up on the Internet. I kept training and learning and practicing new things. Until well, here I am today.
What is this Tricking?
Tricking is a combination of kicks, flips, and twists, eaching comprimising an integral part of the whole. Sometimes tricking skills use multiple aspects of those types. Tricks can usually be done in combination with other tricks.
What is your gymanstics, martial arts, cheer leading, other-forms-of-formal-training background?
Non-existent. Formal training isn't to be underestimated, however.
Why are you constantly wearing those shoes? SHOES I SAY!
Ha ha! It took me a while to realize that nobody else regularly wears shoes when they're tricking. Who knows, why not? It helps a lot. Sure it may be more cumbersome, but for me it's worth it. Now I can do things easily with shoes on, and even easier without them on. Plus, shoes add a sense of style! Yeno, gotta look good too! Recently I've started to go shoeless simply because I just can't be bothered to keep them on as my body falls apart haha.
What did you make this website with?
Why a site like Just the Skills?
To help the proliferation of accurate knowledge about Tricking skills. No Tricking-related politics, philosophies, forced opinions, or dogma. Just straight up knowledge. Do you disagree with something I say? Cool! Asking questions leads to getting more answers.
What kind of camera do you use?
Casio Exilim EX-P505. It's a great camera, especially indoors. Be warned, outdoors while it may still have superb clarity and sharpness, this sort of takes away from the smoothness of the frames in the video, as you may observe in some of the videos on the website. But it a great camera to use, with lots of features, and it is very easy to get videos off of it, since it stores them on an SD card.
You won't see many videos from it in the tutorials here, but I recently upgraded to a Sony HDR-CX190.
I don't know why I have this, but somebody might just love me sooo much one day that they feel they need to use this.
